About

Hi there! My name is Brenna Williams, and I have been fortunate enough to enjoy a wide range of educational opportunities during my teaching career. I have a Master's Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language, and I am a licensed ESL teacher in Illinois. I currently teach at the high school level. I'm patient, persistent, and I place a very high value on honest communication of expectations and progress.

I've also taught academic writing at the University of Illinois to both undergraduate and graduate students. I understand the writing fundamentals that students need to be successful, and how those fundamentals build up to high school writing and beyond. I'm able to break those complex skills down into small, manageable tasks.

Before that, I worked in Beijing, China for three years! While there, I taught test prep full time to over a hundred different students, primarily one-on-one. My specialties include:

- SAT Reading, Writing, and Essay

- ACT Reading, English, and Essay

- Middle- and Upper-level SSAT

- SAT II Literature

Standardized tests are all about familiarity and practice. I can help you and your student set realistic goals and guide you through the content knowledge and test awareness you need to improve your scores.

I'm a teacher simply because I love connecting with students, figuring out their specific goals, and helping them reach 'em. :) I love langauge in all its forms, and I enjoy sharing that with students - nothing can open up as many doors as good communication skills!

Frequently asked questions

I start off with a trial lesson to make sure that everyone is on the same page about student goals, expectations, and timelines for tutoring. During this time, I will want to get to know a student and informally figure out their level in order to design a study plan. It's also nice for the student, to make sure our personalities are a good match.

- M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language from the University of Illinois
- Illinois State K-12 Teaching license with ESL Endorsement
- B.A. in East Asian Langauge and Cultures from the University of Illinois, concentration in foreign language teaching
- Cambridge CELTA TESL certificate

Growing up, I was absolutely convinced I wanted to become a computer engineer. While I was in college, I realized the best part of my day wasn't engineering - it was my volunteer work teaching programming to middle school students. I switched into education after that!

I prefer to work with students ages 10 to adult.

For English langauge learning, I have worked primarily with Mandarin and Spanish speakers - but I'm happy to put in the work to learn what areas of English tend to be most problematic for speakers of other languages as well!

For test prep, I have worked with students from middle school to high school ages.
