Frequently asked questions

I always try to guage the student's current understanding of the subject first. That allows me to improvise an approach that fills the gaps in their knowledge. Once the background knowledge is established, I move into new material for the student. I often ask questions to ensure they are following my explanations, like "for this equation, how many asymptotes do you think it has?"

I have been  a volunteer tutor at my high school for 3 years, tutoring a variety of mathematics subjects from Algebra 1 to Geometry to Calculus BC. I consider myself successful in preparing students for tests or filling gaps in their knowledge, no matter what level they are at. I have also worked as an instructor at Code Ninjas, a place where kids of all ages come to learn to code. It really helped me get comofrtable working with kids and guiding them through their problems.

If it is a one-time lesson, I charge $30, but I can negotiate prices for long-term students.

It started with volunteering at my school's Peer Tutoring Club. I've tutored math successfully for three years but want to challenge myself further as a teacher.

I recently helped a student understand polynomial graphs -  a topic in Algebra 2 that almost everyone has found confusing depending on how good the teacher was. I spent an hour going over her homework problems with her, explaining how to predict the end behavior, asymptote locations, even odd assymptotes, etc. When it seemed like she had a good grasp of everything, I improvised a practice problem for graphing a polynomial. I actually made a mistake in explaining the solution, and I was very pleased to hear the student defend her solution. It's very nice to see that level of confidence form so quickly.

Am I open to advice and criticism? Do I have a specific topic I want to discuss with the teacher, or is it general help?
