First I try to find out the crux of the issue meaning I'll need to work with them on content until we figure out why they're struggling with the material. Next I'll make a plan based on the student's schedule because my main goal is for them to feel the desire to keep practicing and not treat it as a burden. Then it's a matter of tracking progress and making adjustments to the work level, speed, and quantity based on their receptiveness.

I have worked for 2 years as a math intstructor at Kumon. While working at Kumon, 1.5 years of that overlapped with me working for a small private tutoring company called the math and science tutoring center where I taught a large range of subjects from standardized tests, math, a variety of sciences, economics, and even history occasionally. This past year, I felt separated from tutoring having not tutored for so long being at college, that I started my own online tutoring practice and have worked with 15 students in the past 1.5 years to bring each of them success in many different subjects.

I got started teaching back when I was a junior in high school because I thought it was something I might be could at. In fact, I started enjoying tutoring more not because I was good at it, but because it made me constantly review content that I would otherwise not use meaning I was able to learn from my students as much as they were learning from me. That allowed me to create stronger bonds with my studnets and I believe that it helps me be even a better teacher to them.

I have worked with students as young as 5 to as old as 22. I have worked from counting numbers to multi variable calculus and GRE practice tests. I have 13 years of chess experience and work with students primarily in the beginner to developing levels of chess. 

A recent event I was fond of was helping one of my students earlier this year take a failing grade and raise it over 60% to a passing grade because I knew that this student had not only understood the content that I was teaching but has not gotten a new burst of confidence with learning the material. 

The biggest piece of advice I would give is to make sure the teacher and the student have a good connection. Most tutor to student relationships that fail are most likely from the bond with the tutor and not because the tutor didn't know how or what to teach.

I would make sure they know some of their more recent preformances and areas of struggles because it will help tutors gauge where the issues are faster than doing it manually. Additionally make sure that you are ready to share stuff about how you study and learn because it's very rare for 2 students to learn the same way and express the same level of interest in the same subject to the same degree so it will take a different approach for each student and that is something they should be willing to share with their tutor at the beginning of the relationship.
