About

Hello! I am a loving wife and mother of three children. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from The International Academy of Design & Technology in Chicago, and I have been a certified AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutor at Eastview Middle School in Bartlett for twelve years, tutoring ALL subjects. I have also been tutoring one-on-one out of my home for eight years. My training, experience and proven methods, using a white board and the WICOR (writing, inquiry, collaboration, reading) strategy from the AVID program, will improve your student's critical thinking skills, memory retention, note-taking skills and yes, their grades! We will work through his/her schoolwork and/or point of confusion in any subject, using a method of inquiry, rather than merely being given answers. This has proven to increase retention, understanding and critical thinking. They will learn through my example, how to become master question-askers, how to use three column notes when solving a problem or confusion, as well as how to take excellent and proven focus notes (previously called cornell notes) for test prep.

During these difficult times of COVID 19, I can tutor virtually using face time, Google DUO, Zoom and a wonderful tool called webwhiteboard.

My passion is tutoring school-age children from PreK through ninth grade, and drawing out each student's individuality and uniqueness. I make it a point to "study" each and every one, getting to know his/her strengths and areas of challenge.

My students quickly come to trust my skills, knowledge and genuine caring, as I route them on to success. I am happy to say that many have told me that our time surprisingly goes by very quickly, and that they find it enjoyable and fun. One of the best and most rewarding parts of tutoring for me, is watching a student who starts out feeling inadequate or even saying that they are dumb, turn into confident lovers of learning.

Rachel tutored my daughter for two years in Math. Both my daughter’s classroom grade and her Math MAP score improved significantly. Rachel was flexible when it came to scheduling and understanding when it came to last minute tutoring requests prior to tests. She’s both professional and caring at the same time.

She was very good at explaining things in a way that was tailored to the student. My daughter went from a C math student to an A math student for the first time ever and looked forward to working with Miss Rachel. Miss Rachel was also very accommodating working around our schedule and ensuring my daughter was prepared for her tests. I highly, highly recommend Miss Rachel!

Frequently asked questions

When I meet with a student for the first time, my process is to go over the AVID way of tutoring that I utilize, explaining the use of the white dry erase board, and importance of using colored markers to aid in explanation, especially helpful in explaining steps for math problems.  We would go over the process of inquiry as opposed to answers only (to a reasonable degree), three-column notes for points of confusion which would include Question, notes and steps (written in words & using appropriate subject vocabulary), as well as focus notes, emphasizing how to chunk ideas, revise and write higher-level questions on the left side of the notes within each chunk, and write a summary. Then, we would dive into homework and/or classwork from the week, focusing on any mistakes from homework, tests and/or quizzes.

Having my bachelor's degree, even one that is not in education shows my ability to be a finisher, that I am well-rounded, cultured, have critical thinking skills, and collaboration and teamwork skills.

Over the course of my twelve years as an AVID tutor, I have attended multiple training classes each year called tutorolgy that upper staff from the AVID program in School District U-46 conducted. I have received an official certificate from the district, stating that I am certified as an AVID tutor.

As a one-on-one tutor for dozens of students over the course of eight years out of my home, I have multiple references that are available upon request.
