I really enjoy seeing students understand something that wasn't clear to them before. I am strong on questioning so that the student can arrive at the answer. I use various methods and materials to encourage learning.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I begin with a new student, I may use an informal reading inventory to see where their reading level is.
If writing is the student's need, I like to go through recent writing samples they have done. We talk about the strengths and improvements needed.
When working with ESL students learning English, I consult with parents or can give a simple online ESL test that will give a learning level.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a teacher for 30 years. I taught first through fourth grade students for 15 years. I also subbed for about ten years in kindergarten through 5th grade. I have also taught ESL online with Chinese students. I am currently working with middle school students in the AVID program at my local middle school.
