About

As a high school math teacher for 29 years, I have had a lot of success using different strategies to help students learn math while reducing their anxiety levels towards this subject. I will prepare in advance of every tutoring session by reviewing your quizzes, tests and homework so you can maximize your learning time with me during the tutoring sessions.

I really enjoy experiencing the joy with students when they truly "get it". What makes my efforts stand out is my ability to help you understand the concept and make the connections that take learning math beyond memorizing and into the realm of true understanding. The past year with Covid has made learning math very challenging. This is why I now have decided to take some of my time and tutor those in need

Dennis was the perfect Tutor for Ashton, we were so lucky to find him. He is so patient, encouraging, kind. He made Ashton feel comfortable and he was able to ask questions when he needed to, something hes never been able to do with other teachers. Excellent!!!!!!

    Frequently asked questions

I set up an initial free one on one session to have a conversation with a potential student to see if they feel my services are a good fit for them

I have been a math teacher in Cedar Rapids for 29 years and have used differentiated approaches to help students reduce anxiety and learn math.  I have taught every math course from algebra prep through trigonometry.  I am the 2021 Kennedy teacher of the year, awarded by the rotary club of Cedar Rapids

    I charge $50 per hour.

I fell in love with the idea of teaching math while in college, tutoring some of my peers.  I was fortunate to get my current job at CR Kennedy HS 29 years ago and am still there today.  As an empty nester, I now want to help more students during my extra time on certain nights and/or weekends to learn math

I have worked with literally thousands of math students through my 29 years ranging in all ability levels

I am very proud of seeing the "light bulb" go off when a student masters a math concept.  I am blessed to have experienced this many times throughout my career

My advice for students looking to hire a math tutor is to look for someone who uses multiple strategies to help you really learn the material, and not simply memorize it.

The more you can self advocate, the better your experience will be with that teacher.  For example, don't simply go to the teacher and say,  "I don't understand it".   Rather, show them what you have tried along with presenting your work to the teacher.   This helps the teacher understand what thought processes you have tried and maximizes your time learning from that teacher
