Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Initially I prefer to have a conversation with the parent as well as the individual student to determine the academic needs of the student which will guide my lessons. If the student attends school, any information the classroom teacher shares will be highly valued. In addition, we will set some guidelines for the tutoring sessions.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I currently hold a Bachelors of Education Degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. In addition, I have training provided by the International Reading Association through yearly conferences as well as classes from The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginina.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I like to have a conversation with each individual to determine the needs of each student as well as what level of reading or math they currently posses. However, my prices usually range between $30-$40 dollars for an hour session and 20 dollars for a half hour session.
How did you get started teaching?
I began my teaching career working with thrid graders and moved to working with Title I reading students in grades one through seven. Eventually I transitioned to working more extensively with beginning readers in first grade and invlolved the students in a Reading Education and Discovery Program modeled after Reading Recovery which is a program designed to promote reading success.
What types of students have you worked with?
I spent my first year working with Learning Disabled students in the fifth grade as an associate. I then moved to third grade and eventually taught reading in a Title I Reading classroom working with elementary aged children. A large portion of my time was spent with beginning readers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
It is always a delight to see a student who is struggling begin to succeed in their academic area and feel pride in their work as well as to also begin to value themselves as a learner.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
To hire a tutor I would look for a specific tutor to meet your needs. What is the education level of the tutor and do they have previous training and experience teaching your area of need.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Would some one on one instructional time with an experienced teaher with valued teacher training be beneficial to me or my child? If yes, I beleieve I may be of assistance to you. In addition, before talking to a tutor it would be beneficial to discuss the academic needs of your child with the classroom teacher. Ask what the reading level of your child is with the classroom teacher as well as any specific areas which need improvement.
