About

I'm a recently retired high school English teacher, former broadcast journalist and published writer. I have taught grades 9-12 in courses that include 9th grade literature and composition, honors American literature, journalism, and dramatic writing for stage and screen. I also taught an SAT prep course for five years, based on the Princeton Review test prep curriculum.

I enjoy working one-to-one with students and seeing that "aha" moment when something really clicks. Years as an editor and freelance writer have given me real-world experience that I love to pass along to students. I particularly enjoy teenagers, and despite the fact that I'm old enough to be their grandparent, can relate to them and the issues they face every day.

I taught high school for 13 years, taught freshman composition (Kennesaw State and GA Perimeter) for three years before getting my teaching certificate, and worked as a writing center tutor for three years. Prior to my education experience, I worked as a copywriter, editor, and reporter for several broadcast outlets including RKO Radio Networks and CNN. I also have several years in public relations in events planning and the medical field.

Frequently asked questions

It's important to get to know the student a bit first. I like to find out what their favorite classes are, how they like writing/reading/research, what kind of activities or sports do they like. That info helps me relate to them through their own interests. Next, I need to know what they dislike or find difficult about the particular subject or skill they're working on, because that helps us focus on the critical need without wasting time. From there we begin to identify ways to improve.

My undergraduate degree is in communications, and I have two master's degrees: professional writing (Kennesaw State, 2001) and teaching (KSU, 2007). In addition, I taught first-year composition as an adjunct professor at KSU (2002-2004 and 2010) and first-year comp at GA Perimeter (2002).

Since 2001, I've tutored at the KSU Writing Center, William and Reed Academy in Johns Creek, and privately. I retired from full-time teaching in June 2020.
