English Tutoring/ Essay Proof Reading/ ASVAB Prep/ Algebra Tutoring
About
Hello, my name is Kathryn Collins and I'm a sophomore in college. I decided to start tutoring after I was medically discharged from the army because of an injury. I've taken the ASVAB twice and scored high both times. I used to help prepare JROTC cadets for the ASVAB when I was in high school. I also peer tutored throughout middle school and high school. I came back to tutoring because I missed the sense of accomplishment and pride I felt when tutoring. There's nothing that compares to watching someone have that "aha" moment when they finally grasp a new concept or the excitement when a person gets a good grade on a test or essay that they worked hard on. I have been told I have a gift for understanding things and explaining them. I always do my best to personalize my explanations to the individual and will always work with a person until we find what works for them. My strong suit is English, as I took AP and advanced courses throughout my education. I am available for tutoring, proofreading, and editing. I also have a lot of experience with basic math and algebra. I can assist with just about any subject even if it means learning it along with the tutee. I have taken quite a few different AP and advanced courses so I have experience with AP exam preparation. I am very flexible with my schedule and prefer to meet in public places (or simply online and over the phone) but can tutor at home depending on the circumstances. Whether you are looking for a general tutor to help with all subjects or just a tutor to help with something specific, I will work with you to figure out the best way to meet your goal.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First we work together and figure out what works best for them and how they learn best. Then we figure out their long term and short term goals and come up with a plan for reaching them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a high school diploma and am a sophomore in college. I took AP courses throughout high school. I peer tutored throughout middle school and high school. I helped JROTC cadets prepare for the ASVAB while I was the company executive officer of my MCJROTC unit.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I usually charge around $20 per hour for sessions
My pricing is flexible and I will work with you to figure it out
How did you get started teaching?
I was a peer tutor for 6 years. Even before I started peer tutoring, I was always helping my friends and classmates if they were struggling with something in class. One of my teachers noticed and recommended that I start peer tutoring. While in JROTC I helped others prepare for the ASVAB at the request of my Marine Instructor. While working as a nanny for small children, I helped them learn all the basics(the alphabet, colors, numbers, etc.)
What types of students have you worked with?
I have helped students of all ages under 18. Most of my experience is with middle school and high school students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently helped a friend of mine pass the ASVAB and reach their dream of joining the Army. He had taken the ASVAB twice and was unable to score high enough to join. For two weeks we went over and completed 20 or more example questions a day. We spent extra time on the questions he struggled with. If he couldn't understand the general way to solve a problem, we would look for new ways until we found one that worked for him. When he finally went to MEPs to take the ASVAB, he was expecting to barely make a qualifying score. Instead he scored double that and was able to pick almost any job he wanted.
