Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Step One: Open the floor. I let you ask me anything you need to in order to get more comfortable with me and my expertise. This is also an opportunity for you to tell me about yourself, especially as it related to your learning style.
Step Two: Goal selection. Let me know what it is you're trying to accomplish so we can come up with a measurable, concrete goal to strive for. This helps you know the sessions are working and track your own progress during our time together.
Step Three: Get started. At this point, I'll set up a curriculum to help outline what we'll be covering during our time together so that we don't waste a minute of each session.
Step Four: Feedback. Once your goal has been met, it's time to step back and debrief about how the sessions went, what you liked and what you'd change. This helps you consider whether or not there is more you'd like to learn and helps me grow as an instructor.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
High School: English and Sociology
Undergrad (BA): Sociology (with heavy English coursework
Grad School (MSW): Social Work (Addictions Counseling)
Live Workshops: "The 12-Month Manuscript," "Self-Publishing 101," "Working on Wealth."
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
All lessons are billed at $30 per half hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I started with instructing my fellow classmates in various aspects of grammar in preparation for English tests. This began in middle school and continued throughout my academic career. My first PAID position was as a teaching assistant for a middle school English class at the school I attended.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What's kept them from understanding a particular concept or being able to execute a particular skill in the past? If you can figure out what doesn't work for you as a learner, it's easier for someone to teach you in a way that will stick.
