What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I think understanding student background is extremely important because that carves out the teaching approach. I would like to get to know the student's educational experience and why they are needing an extra push.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been an AICE English/ English Honors teacher assistant for three years. My responsibilities include helping a class of roughly 30 high school kids with any questions and concerns. This has allowed me to interact with students from various backgrounds and has made me understand that a cookie-cutter approach is detrimental to ones learning experience.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I think some level of introspection is required because that allows the student to create an environment of discussion. The most important thing is to make sure that distractions are limited and the student is in a healthy environment which is allowing them to learn. Of course, cooperation and mutual respect is a must.
