Mike The Social Studies Helper
About
I am a new teacher certified in Middle School 5-9 Social Studies and planning on taking the 6th-12th certification in August. Social Studies is my passion and I want to inspire all those willing to learn.
My Teaching Philosophy
I want to emphasize three things to my students:
1 Consider Point of View of person telling story. Every person and culture has one.
2 Finding Relevance to their lives
3 Teach History as a living thing, a continuum, not a past event to be forgotten. Social Studies is not static, it is dynamic. (Cause and Effect)
How will I do this?
1) Traditional means: Lecturing seriously when needed but dramatic if necessary. Dramatic meaning acting out a historical event.
2) Different kinds of media and interaction: TV, Audio recordings, Visual aids, Tactiles, Internet resources, Acting out scenes with students.
3) Will review the lessons in respect to my teaching philosophy.
Performance Measures:
1) Will determine methods of instruction prior to lesson based on nature of material.
2) Will determine type of media prior to lesson
3) Will go over before lesson and after, the three main points of my teaching philosophy until students see how to
incorporate it into their new knowledge.
I would like students to know these things at the end of each day:
Mr. Gilroy cares that I do well and is willing to help.
He knows all of us come from different backgrounds and situations.
He will always try to focus on the main point of a topic so we remember what is most important.
Remember its a LEARNING class, not a MEMORY class.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get to know them a little. I ask what they like to do for fun, what their favorite subjects are, and what they hope to learn from the tutoring experience.
