About

I KNOW language learning can be both tedious and intimidating;, and my tutoring philosophy is to remove these two elements from the process: Therefore, you you can move forward as quickly and enjoyably as possible.

I have studied Spanish for 40 years and worked professionally with the language for 15. Currently, I focus on teaching conversational Spanish, along with its many colorful and interesting idioms. But I am willing to tackle any subject that YOU want to master.

I like meeting and working with new people. I find that it is always possible to find some common ground.

In helping you overcome your linguistic barriers, I always learn something new, as well.

Frequently asked questions

I first acquire a thorough understanding of my new student's goals, along with his or her Spanish background and experience. After meeting with the student, I assess his or her personality type along with learning style. If the student is shy and nervous, I won't overwhelm him/her with high volumes of new material right away. On the other hand, if my new student shows some confidence and willingness to make mistakes without embarrassment, I will add more challenging linguistic elements and increase the pace of sessions.
I have two international relations degrees from Stanford University. (A.B/A.M.). Both of these required extensive completion of foreign language curriculum. I have also worked professionally for 15 years as a Spanish<>English Medical Interpreter and Translator. The requisite knowledge to be successful in these trades I acquired on my own.
No. My typical starting rate is $25/hr. If the assignment requires more extensive preparation or is unusually challenging, my rates go up correspondingly.
After 15 years of Spanish translating/interpreting, mostly behind the computer, I decided I would be happier working one-on-one with actual students.
Mostly elderly adults at the beginner-intermediate level who wanted to focus on improving their conversational skills. But I will work with any person of any age at all levels of ability, including children. (Ages 14 and up)
Work with someone who takes the time to listen to your individual needs and goals. Also, find a tutor/teacher who is both enthusiastic and empathetic. You won't learn nearly as much or as quickly if you feel pressured and stressed.
Does this teacher really care about the student's goals and growth, or is he/she just out to make a quick buck? Will the personal information the student provides be held in strict confidence, or does the tutor/teacher project an aura of unprofessional behavior and low levels of integrity? How well does the tutor know his material? Does he or she arrive at lessons unprepared?
