About
While my knowledge and training spans the PK-12 Math Curriculum, my greatest assets come from a classroom history of teaching students with unique learning needs. I know that if don't have buy-in, I don't have a lesson. So I focus first on relationship, which builds motivation and also helps me to more clearly identify a student's strengths, and what barriers are hindering their progress.
Math is an abstract language, so I believe students need visual and language supports to "translate" its meaning.
My current Florida teaching certifications include Secodary Mathematics (Grades 5-12), Autism Spectrum Disorders, Elementary Education (K-6), Emotionally Handicapped (K-12), English for Speakers of Other Languages (K-12), Preschool/Primary Education (PK-3), Preschool Education, Specific Learning Disabilities.
I'm an old-fashioined sap when it comes to the thrill of seeing a student turn on their own lightbulb! Helping a students restore their own sense of competence and learn to take risks is truly one of the very highest honors on Planet Earth.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Each person's needs are unique. For some students, I provide a survey assessment tailored to your current course of study, to get an idea where you should begin. I also conduct an interview and/or ask you to complete a preferences form and indicate how much time you can commit to practice between sessions.
My goal is to adapt to your needs and interests, to learn from observation over time what works best for you. It is the most joyful part of teaching: developing a strong relationship.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my Bachelors in Special Education from University of South Florida, and my Masters in Mathematics Education, 5-12, from Western Governors University.
I retired early after 19 years in my local district, but I continue to hold eight teaching certifications from the State of Florida, including Mathematics 6-12 and a variety related to specific learning needs. I may be adding a science certification this year. I have extensive experience and education related to autism spectrum disorders.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My current fee for 50-60 minutes of tutoring ranges between $35 and $45, depending upon the needs of the student. Higher level math and specific learning needs require additional preparation on my part, but I am quick to offer a discount when appropriate.
Once we get going, I require a monthly commitment (no fewer than three sessions per month), but the first session is free. If I need to cancel or reschedule with less than 48 hours notice, I provide a free session.
I am also open to sessions with 2 or 3 students studying the same material, with a flexible, reduced rate. If you have a friend who is a good "study buddy" for you, feel free to make arrangements for that and cut your fee by half or more! Learning in a small group can be powerful!
