Jude’s English And Writing Tutoring
About
I have a passion for the written word and have a strong record of helping students rise to the best of their ability. I have been a high school, middle grades, and college English teacher for over 20 years, hold a BA, MA, and EdS degrees in English education, and have taught AP and IB classes. I have had a great deal of success helping students become better writers. Regardless of their current ability, I can teach students to analyze and understand writing prompts, develop a cohesive thesis, and write effective and formal essays. If a student has mastered the basics of the three or five paragraph essay (depending upon grade-level) I can teach them to become more effective writers by developing their own unique voice which will make their essays stand out. I can also prepare student's for standardized tests such as the PSAT, SAT, Pre-Act, ACT, FCAT, EOC, and GED by teaching proven and unique test-taking strategies that will inspire confidence and improve scores. Lastly, I offer proofreading services.
I love working with intellectually curious students. I have an excellent rapport with all learners but especially enjoy working with students who already have a strong reading and writing skill-set. I also enjoy helping students who may struggle with standardized tests by teaching them unique strategies that will improve their scores and give them confidence. I love the opportunity that one-on-one instruction provides to specifically tailor lessons that ensure success.

I began teaching in Brooklyn, NY in 1998 due to my life-long love of reading and writing and have taught continuously since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all levels and types of students including AP, IB, adult learners, and ESOL students. I have successfully helped students from a variety of academic levels and helped them achieve their potential.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would pay attention to a teacher's experience and background, but more than that, I would encourage students to select tutors who are enthusiastic about their subject matter, are able to make meaningful connections with students, and can challenge students to achieve their potential.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should be aware of specific needs they would like to address. In order to grow as learners and reach their highest potential, students should have an idea of areas where they have struggled in the past. I would also encourage students to reflect on their unique learning styles so they can better identify the types of teachers who will most benefit them.
