Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Spending time getting to know them, their interests and hobbies so that I can tailor sessions to their interests. For example if someone's likes basketball, I will prepare lessons and assignments on that topic.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have certification in English writing, both fiction and fact. I have taught and tutored in various schools and situations for many years
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I try to work with customers based upon their ability to pay, and whether I have to travel etc.
How did you get started teaching?
As a teenager I was a counselor in a camp. I was asked to help teach some of the campers who needed remedial work over the summer. I had a knack for it as well and from then on continued to teach and tutor.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages from pre-teens to senior citizens. I have worked one-on-one, as well as in large classes of 50 or more students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
There are so many, it's hard to zero in on one particular. Becoming a grandparent is high on that list. In general I am curious about the world around me and get excited about exposure to new ideas and experience.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure you and the tutor "click". Someone could be an expert in a subject, but does not connect with you. In that case you are both waiting your time. Expertise and technical skills are important, but so is personality and comfort.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
They should ask the teacher about his experience and qualifications. They should also ask him about his biggest challenges in life and career and how he dealt with them.
