Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to begin by getting to know them and establishing rapport. I also like to establish what goals they hope to accomplish from our session(s) together. Then I need to ascertain what knowledge they currently possess so that I can narrow down how best to help them. From there I like to establish a road map - this is something the student and I will create together - a plan for what we will accomplish during the session(s).
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
i have a B.A. in European History, and both my Masters and PhD are in International Conflict Resolution. I have spent 10 years as a classroom teacher, teaching predominantly AP Psychology, AP European History, and World History. I have also been a Reader for the AP exams for the past 5 years.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Prices are generally set at $40/ hour. Lesson session lengths are flexible (anywhere from 30 -90 minutes) as requested by the customer.
How did you get started teaching?
Teaching is something I’ve been involved in since I was a teenager; I actually started by teaching dance at the age of 14. When I went to college, I knew I wanted to teach and picked subjects that interested me. I started my teaching career immediately after graduating college.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have taught mostly high school, but also taught middle school for a couple years. I’ve taught students of all levels (ESE, standard, Honors, and AP). I’ve taught students that are at various proficiencies in the English language and I’ve taught students that are Gifted. I’ve taught students of all socioeconomic levels, different religions, ethnicities, etc. I have taught all types.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
