Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I want my students to be comfortable with me so I give them time to Acclimate while also accessing some of their base skills.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching for four years and working in early childhood education 4 over 9 years. I have also tutored for over 10 years.
How did you get started teaching?
I come from a family of educators so teaching is in my blood. For me it's not about just teaching, it is about pouring into the lives of the young people that will one day run the world.
What types of students have you worked with?
Not only have I worked with students from all socioeconomic backgrounds and ages, but also English language learners and students with cognitive/behavioral and special needs.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
At the end of last school year my kindergartners were in tears because they realized that I would not be their teacher for first grade. As they all cried "I'm not going", one student looked over at me and said "I'll go the first grade, but only because it'll make Ms. Shaw happy". I know that he did not have the exact words but he knew that I was sowing into them so that they can grow in another place.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Pick a teacher you can be comfortable with and you trust will give it their all for you to be successful.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Being sure about what you need, and even if you are not sure, be sure that you're willing to do whatever it takes to succeed.
