Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to get to know them a little to understand where and why they're struggling. This helps me figure out a way to help them, in a way they will enjoy. They are more likely to remember the material if it's enjoyable for them.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a mechanical engineer and am most comfortable with math. I went to elementary school in Germany where the math was about 2-3 years ahead of what they were teaching here in the U.S., based on my experience. So according to the school, while in the 6th grade, I was really learning closer to grade 8-9 year math. I was dance captain of my high school dance team for 4 years. Even as a freshman, I was choreographing and teaching routines to kids of all ages. This then helped me supervise the middle school robotics team while still in high school. Those things extended to college where I taught elementary school robotics, choreographed dance routines for schools and other organizations, and helped my younger siblings in school as well.
How did you get started teaching?
I love helping people. My parents stopped being able to help me with math in the 4th grade and I had to figure things out on my own. I would like to be there for the kids whose parents may struggle with math as well. Sometimes it's easier to ask for outside help too.
What types of students have you worked with?
Elementary, high school, and college students
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
We all have strengths and weaknesses. Math is a strength of mine. History, not at all. Just because you may need assistance in school doesn't mean you are "stupid" or anything like that. I think it just means you are going to go far in life.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Everyone learns differently. If possible, try to find a teacher/tutor that caters to your learning ability. Find what helps you and make sure they care. Who knows, you might be the president, CEO, or parent needing to help their own kids one day.
