About

A+ Reading Services assists very young struggling learners in kindergarten, grade 1, 2 and 3 ONLY in progressing to grade level achievement. That is my specialty. I assess in five areas including phonics and sight words . I then design a learning plan that targets areas of weakness based on those five assessment results. Because I'm able to pinpoint and address specific needs, your child's progress is amazingly swift. Another major goal is motivating your child to fall in love with books !

After more than 3 decades serving as a classroom teacher and Reading Specialist , I launched this tutorial service. The strategies work for students who are reading below grade level including autistic and other special needs learners. My passion is seeing the joy on a child's face when they finally realize " I can read!"

Dr. Mary has been an invaluable help to my daughters reading journey. She is knowledgeable, patient and consistent. My daughters reading, writing and spelling have all improved since starting tutoring with her. I would recommend Dr.Marys tutoring services.

    Frequently asked questions

I assess to determine areas of strength and weakness. Then, I create a learning plan to pinpoint their needs based on the assessments. Students make accelerated progress towards grade level with this approach.

I began teaching in New Jersey as a second grade teacher which I taught for 8 years. It was my favorite grade. I taught first grade, but moved to teaching Title I Reading as a Reading specialist, then a Literacy Coach.. I relocated to Massachusetts and taught there for 30 years before returning to school to earn a PHD. I left public school and began teaching university courses for both undergrads and graduates seeking licensure as Reading teachers. I supervised student teachers and became a literacy consultant for an international publishing company until retirement in 2016.
Due to my superb post graduate professional development by college trainers who learned from the New Zealand guru, the late Dr Marie Clay ,I'm equipped to instruct learners with special needs and those who are autistic. My specialty is struggling readers in mid-kindergarten to grade 3.
I'm eternally grateful to to the office of County Commissioner Viviana Janer. She approved a Community Betterment grant I wrote that enabled me to train volunteers and serve struggling readers at BVL Library in Orlando Florida. Project Feed and Read was a Saturday program that provided instruction to 15 low achieving readers and writers. It was unfortunately discontinued due to the pandemic in 2020.
The teacher needs to be knowledgeable in more than simply strategies for reading. The teacher should understand the research on how reading develops in young readers, and how to closely observe using the tool known as a running record. The teacher should value assessment to inform instruction. Progress should valued just as much as achievement. Reading whole stories and applying strategies should take precedence over worksheets. Phonics should be seen as a tool with comprehension viewed as most important.
What's easy for me? What's hard for me? What do I know? What do I almost know,? What resources can I use to practice what I'm learning? What hands on activities do you use?
