Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The most important thing to build success is to create a warm and comfortable setting. I use humor and fun to engage young readers in their own education. Typically, I establish a good rapport in the first session and understand the student's goals, milestones, and concerns so we can succesfully address them. Tutoring is all about specialized, intentional attention to help bridge learning gaps.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have 45+ combined years of experience as a caregiver, tutor, and pediatric nurse.
In each capacity, I take the time to teach children the life and literacy skills that expand their worldview.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Online tutoring: $15 - 20/hour
In-person tutoring: $22 - 30/hour
I provide discounts for tutees that have >4 hours/week of tutoring.
How did you get started teaching?
I babysat children from a young age and once I started a family of my own I began fostering. Children came to my home with all levels of education and ability and I developed tutoring methods to help them catch up and get ahead in school. As a mother of eight, including three adopted special needs children, literacy and education were of the utmost importance to me. My foster children, tutees, and children have needed support to complete individualized education plans and to navigate gifted and talented courses. More recently, I began teaching adult literacy to late-in-life learners and English as a second language students.
