About

I've been teaching and tutoring students since beginning undergrad. Currently, I hold a B.Sc. in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry and am pursuing a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from The Mayo Clinic. I am extremely passionate in science and my primary goal in tutoring is to help students think for themselves and find joy and wonder in subject matter. Most of my time is spent in a research lab, and one thing that I've learned is that science is about asking the right questions; therefore, I seek to help students gain mastery of information by asking interesting and thought provoking questions regarding the material they are studying.

I enjoy instilling the wonder of the natural world in others. Every stage of my career, the most rewarding moments are those in which those I teach or mentor get a little glimmer in their eye - as if something just clicked! When I can help someone not only understand something, but begin see the beautfy in all of the complexity and organized chaos that is biology - that by far is my favorite thing ever.

Frequently asked questions

First, I want to become familiar with (1) the materials that they are using in class or at school and then (2) understand the goals of the student (test prep, general practice, reading comprehension, developing better study skill etc.) After this, I will begin each session by (3) probing to find out where the student's strengths and weaknesses lie in the context of the material. The session time itself is mostly spent (4) explaining to the student the material conversationally. I've found this type of learning it best because it directly engages them. Finally at the end of the session, we will (5) review the material and (6) set 1-3 goals for the next session.

My name is Damian Di Florio. I currently hold a Bachelor of Science in Biology with a Minor in Chemistry from Robert Morris University and am a PhD student at the Mayo Clinic studying Biomedical Science with a focus in Clinical and Translation Science.

I served as a peer tutor and teaching assistant at my undergraduate institution (Robert Morris University, Moon PA) and also have been providing 1:1 tutoring for the last 5 years outside of my institution. I currently TA four courses at the Mayo Clinic including statistics, pathophysiology, and two courses in FDA regulatory science. In the past I tutored students in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and genetics - but as long as the subject is science related, I can usually provide useful instruction.
