Chemistry Not CheMystery
About
As a chemist I have worked on environmental, medical and industrial projects. I like to bring my real world knowledge to the material so that students can relate better to the chemistry topics. Chemistry should be fun. I have more than two decades of teaching and tutoring experience at the college and high school level. I am a Florida certified chemistry teacher and I have attended the College Board's advanced summer institute for AP Chemistry teachers.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The student contacts me.
They let me know what subject they are currently working on.
I meet with them and assess their knowledge.
We continue meeting until they complete the course.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a degree in chemistry and more than two decades of work and teaching experience.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I usually charge $30 for one student and $40 for two students. I think it is important for students to have a study budy. Also, having two students working and asking questions together improves the learning process.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching after spending three years doing cancer research on fourteen different research projects. One of my coworkers was impressed with the breadth and depth of my knowledge and suggested that I should be sharing what I knew. I found a job at the University of Cincinnati's Science Learning Lab and the rest, as they say, is history.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with thousands of students of all types. I have yet to meet a student who understood every part of the chemistry curriculum. It is normal to struggle with some parts of a chemistry class. Students need to get good scores on the portions that they understand. Some students ask for help. Some students don't.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a really good time in France with my wife. We went for a wedding anniversary and biked through the wine regions of Alsace. She speaks French and I speak German. We had a great time.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Make sure that the tutor increases your interest in the subject. If you aren't interested you won't do well. Chemistry should be fun.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
Students need to be prepared to be honest. Don't try to hide things that you don't know about. Tutors aren't grading you. We want to fix the problem but we need to know what the problem is. Be candid, be honest let the tutor help you. If you knew everything you wouldn't be meeting with a tutor!
