JDL English And Writing Tutor
About
Hello. From the moment I graduated from Middlebury College as an English major I have been an educator, first as a high school English and American Studies teacher, then as a principal, Superintendent of Schools and adjunct professor of education policy analysis.
During my 40 years in education, I have taught students at all levels, from elementary school to adults seeking to improve their writing skills. I hold a BA in English Literature, a Masters in Education, and a doctorate in education.
In addition, I have traveled to more than 100 countries, often spending time visiting schools and learning about how instruction and teaching vary from one country to another. These experiences have taught me that the key to successful learning, whether in the poorest school or in the most well-endowed school is the quality of the teacher in the classroom.
Whether I am teaching a middle school student or an adult, I always enjoy seeing a student find joy in discovering a piece of literature or writing a great essay that others praise. During my college years I recall how good I felt when my creative writing teacher and fellow classmates applauded a piece of fiction or poem I had written. I want all of my students to experience the same feeling of success.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically I begin my work with a student by helping the student to identify his/her writing or learning goals. We then visit these goals together over our time together to assess how successful our work together has been.
I also design lesons that motivate the student to ensure that the student finds joy in our work together. Students tell me that they have fun when working with me.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been a high school teacher of English and American Studies, high school principal, curriculum director, Superintenmdent of Schools, college teacher, and tutor.
