Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First and foremost, I like to develop a basis with my students and gain an understanding of his or her current knowledge of the topic. The key factor in teaching anything is understanding where theoretical gaps lie in the knowledge of my students. At this point I like to use guided exercises to encourage my students to think independently and come to their own conclusions on a specific topic. Research has shown that this method of teaching yields stronger, more long lasting results. The next step is to reinforce, do more exercises and theoretical review to ensure the knowledge really sticks.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a BS in organic chemistry and extensive education in all varieties of natrual sciences that were required for my degree. I have also written a thesis in synthetic organic chemistry which has been published in academic journals. Moreover, I have several years of experience tutoring various age groups.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard rate is 25$/hour, I am available for as many hours as are needed to ensure the material will be retained.
How did you get started teaching?
A professor of mine reached out to me the spring semester of my freshman year of college looking for a general chemistry tutor for her child. I was happy to help, and from there it just took off. I have been consistently tutoring for the four years since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all sorts of age groups. K-12, as well as college level.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A recent event that I hold in very fond memory would be my college graduation. It represented a pivotal moment in my life and a remarkable accomplishemnt that I will always be proud of.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Qualifications and experience are very important when it comes to science of all sorts. Time spent in the field directly correlates to knowledge held. To receive the best education I would say it is important to look for someone with adequate qualifications to teach the subject. Moreover, a teacher with more time spent teaching will have worked out the kinks in their process. These two factors are imperative to a good teacher.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Really think about where your problems lie; it is important to understand the theory behind any topic you hope to master. This simply expedietes the whole process. It is also of value to look at previous work that might have been unsatisfactroy and ask about where the issues in that lie.
