I've been a teacher and tutor for more than 25 years. Having earned a graduate degree in Education -majoring in both Special Ed and Bilingual Ed from CUNY, my expertise has been working with students within those populations.The role of an educator requires one to wear lots of 'hats.'
These may include mentoring, guiding, motivating, role modeling, leading, and much more. And that's the art of being a facilitator of learning.
A tutor must develop a plan tailored specifically for and focused on each student based on student's strengths, weaknesses, challenges, and goals; create a connection with the student and family - earning their trust; keep communication lines open: and evaluate progress. After many years as a tutor, I've discovered that my main job is to help tutees to help themselves - putting into practice learning strategies, study skills, among others. The ultimate goal is for the student to become a life-long independent learner.
