About

I have been tutoring professionally since 2010, when I started both tutoring and preemptively teaching mathematics to students ages 8-20, as well as chemistry, biology, English, and SAT/ACT/AP Exam prep. I graduated from Washington University in St Louis.

Teaching is one of the most important things a person can do. We all remember the teachers who formed us, made us the people we are today. They inspire, they inform, and they incite us to learn. The curiosity we all have is stoked by teachers, who keep us thinking and keep our brains fit and full.

I have worked for several professional groups, and my track record speaks for itself - in the 2015/16 academic year, I tutored 2 students who went on to earn perfect 36 scores on the ACT, as well as over two dozen 5 score AP exams, and coached several people through the college admissions process.

After the dramatic changes that took place in 2020, I retailored my model to focus on filling in the gaps more easily left behind by the nature of remote teaching. I have had tremendous success in one-on-one and small-group settings to find missing understanding and to rebuild foundations from the gorund up.

We met Ben via tutors.com a few months ago when our middle son (#2) was struggling with MCPS 8th grade geometry and his previous tutor was not helping. Ben was a hit from session one, so much so that son #3 who was a little behind in algebra 1 was interested in having some help. Ben helped a lot in this subject also.
Ben also tutored son #2 in SSAT prep for private HS placement. Ben was super prepared and helpful as he is for a regular session. Our son did amazingly well on the SSAT and it can be related back to the solid tutoring from Ben.
Finally son # 1 is studying for the SAT and on the recommendation of his brothers agreed to give Ben a try. The first session he wasn’t sure it was a solid match but he tried session two and found his groove. Son # 1s test practice test scores have already gone up after only a few weeks.
As a parent I appreciate Ben responsiveness and preparation for each session. He is easy to communicate with both myself and my boys. We are so lucky to have found a solid dependable tutor for our MCPS and private HS student.
Happy to answer any further questions hound they arise.

Ben is an excellent communicator, both of the academic content for my daughter, and about the process, goals, and expectations for me! I have been quite happy with the SAT prep work, and believe we will use his services for general academic work during the school year!

    Frequently asked questions

I tend to ask for students or their parents to send me a list of questions, issues, subjects, and a sample of the coursework in question for me to appraise before we begin, so I can form a structured, hollistically built plan for the individual student.

I have worked as a professional tutor since 2010, and have experience in both private and professional tutoring companies, as well as teaching kitchens, academic institutions, and professional apprentice and intern-style programs.

I operate on a sliding scale for pricing. My hourly rate varies, but will decrease with increased meeting frequency. I am happy to discuss more on a case-by-case basis, so please don't hesitate to reach out. I am open to negotiation within a reasonable margin.

I mentored students younger than me as young as 6rd grade, and maintained a love for it ever since. I have branched out into teaching cooking classes, training young electricians, and editing articles and op-eds for publication in more recent years.

I have worked with students ages 8-20, and have worked with friends and coworkers as old as 55-60 in editing resumes, cover letters, statements on intent, and so on.

I believe it doesn't hurt to shop around for tutors. It is an important match, as you will be working in a concentrated, one on one setting. A lack of understanding can make these interactions difficult, and can get in the way of the learning process. I encourage students to reach out to me and ask questions about me, my style, and my expertise, as well as providing their own needs and wants in a tutor.
