History has been my passion for me since I was in the third grade. I have completed three Masters’ programs in history and have had numerous opportunities to pursue my passion in a variety of different opportunities. I have worked in the National Park Service for over 10 years. Working various sites, I have had the opportunity to interpret different topics in history. I have led a variety of tour groups in including school groups to historic points of interests here in the District of Columbia and the surrounding areas. I get the opportunity to talk about historical content and how particular events affect us today. I have taught in the classroom for four years, and I have been asked to present lectures for a variety of organizations. I have also had the opportunity to do living history where I dress in period attire, which allows me to “step back” into the past. Through my company “John W McCaskill History Alive” I teach history as well as write, shoot, and produce historic films. What excites me most about teaching history is giving the student the opportunity to look at our past, learn from it, understand why a particular event is important, and facilitating better societal impacting choices for the future. Having a background of coaching football for over 15 years, I understand the importance of coaching up the next generation of leaders. Teaching history allows me to prepare scholars to understand the past so that they may be able to better navigate their future.
