I tutor biology for high school and college levels. I am a college instructor. I am a retired instructor from the University of California and currently teach science at private universities and community colleges. I have also taught high school. I have vast experience with AP classes and college preparation. I have passion for science, and have the capacity to make complex scientific concepts very accesible to the students. I train the student to think critically so they can trust their own capacity to suceed in a test. I have extensive expertise with preparation for standardized tests.
I love teaching and I have a passion for learning too. I love getting to know students of all ages and communicate to them my passion for science and the understanding, in a simple way, of the complexities and marvels of the natural world. I like helping my students to build their confidence and to manage their stress and anxieties for test taking. I enjoy grately each class and to see the progress that my students make.
Dr S has been a great help with keeping me organized, giving me tips to study, and answering all my questions. She has made difficult material easy to understand. I highly recommend her as a tutor.
In my first class, I will ask the student about his/her specific goals and we will build together a road map for achieving that goal. To achieve success, clarity of steps towards the goal, setting a timeline, and checking on the milestones accomplished are all extremely crucial. Without commitment by both the student and the teacher, progress will be much more difficult to occur. Getting to know each other and trust are both key ingredients. Therefore, the first class is for goal setting, get to know the syllabus of the course, set the initial short term objectives, overview a first lesson, establish the homework and course expectations, and decide on the means to maintain contact.
I have a PhD in Biology with focus on cell and molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics. I was a research scientist at the University of California for over twenty years, and a college instructor for over thirty years. I teach both in the classroom and online. I receive consistently excellent teaching evaluations by my students and supervisors. I am bilingual, Spanish and English.
