About

I am an incoming undergrad at Duke University, specializing in teaching Math and Science for elementary through middle school students.

I started tutoring from a young age. When I was thirteen, I regularly taught elementary school children Math. In high school, I served as a mentor in Math and Science to middle school children preparing for a nationally-competitive examination. I taught them in small groups, often fewer than two students at once. It was held during the weekends and the sessions last about 3 hours each. We would spend half of the time going through returned mock exams or problem sets and the remainder doing homework or challenging worksheets. Realizing it was difficult for everyone to go through multiple hours of intensive schoolwork, I developed a system of switching subjects or topics every 45 minutes and taking a 5 minute break before each swap to re-energize ourselves. Currently, I work part time as a Math tutor at Mathnasium and help high school students with their college applications. I utilize a similar concept to make learning less frustrating and more effective. In my tutoring career, I taught students of different ages and ability groups. That allows me to customize my lesson plan to suit the unique needs of each student I take.

I believe any student can succeed in any subject. The key is to get my students interested in the subject. I know many find Math and Science opaque and abstract and give up when they do not understand certain concepts. I know how these students feel. I wasn’t particularly interested in Biology until I met my Physiology tutor in high school. He taught like no other, and I benefited from his approach of teaching using a wide variety of materials from stories of pioneering Biologists to YouTube videos to his life experience. I use the same approach in teaching. Working outside of textbooks and worksheets by using Chemistry mini-lab kits, Physics simulations as well as Math games, I motivate students to look at these subjects from many different angles and help them improve.

I personally find helping my students discover their interest in something that they thought they’d never have liked motivates me to commit to teaching at least a few hours a week. Thank you for considering me as a tutor for your child. Please let me know if you have any queries.
