Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Before I meet with the student, I request information on what topics they are finding challenging. Right before our session, I give them a quick 5 question "pre-quiz" to see where they stand in their understanding of the material. I use the quiz along with notes and slides that I can share to help them understand the material better. I prefer our sessions to be a conversation, I like to know about the student's thought process. To gain more information, I ask questions to try to get students to work through the problems in a logical manner.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University.
While a graduate student, I was a teaching assistant for three years. During my Post-Doctoral work at the National Institutes of Health, I performed research but also I taught through the NIH Graduate school. I taught organic chemistry and an MCAT prep course that focused on general, organic and biochemistry. I am now an assistant professor at a small liberal arts college teaching general chemistry.
