Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I would begin with a few ice breakers to get to know the student and help them get acclimated. I also like to have a few fun activities that allows them to show me what they already know to build on their confidence and assess them. I feel that it is important to have a good rapport with each student. A certain level of respect on both sides of the student to teacher relationship is if extreme importance.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I went through a rigorous teacher education program in college. I successfullu received my bachelor's in childhood education with honors. I have a full time job as a first grade teacher. I am also pursuing my MS in Literacy. I specialize in helping young children reach their full reading potential.
How did you get started teaching?
I fell in love with teaching when I was working as a classroom aide in a special education preschool. I was debating going through the process of becoming a teacher and decided to see what it was like for myself. Within the first few weeks as a classroom aide I knew that teaching was, and always will be, my passion.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with a variety of students. My teaching, student teaching, and work experience have given me some diverse experiences. I feel that these unique experiences have made me a much more confident and flexible teacher. My students have taught me that they are all different from each other and that they should be praised for their individuality.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
On my last test given to my students each one of them passed. The lowest grade in the whole class was 85! I am still bubbling with pride for the hardwork my group put in!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who has a flexible style. Not every approach works for every student. Find someone who is willing to find a strategy or style that works best for your specific type of learning. Energy and a positive attitude is a good sign!
