About
Hello! My name is Rebecca and my passion is teaching! I have over 20 years of experience and have taught all levels, including bilingual education, beginning/remedial elementary reading, and middle school and high school essay composition, literature, Spanish, and PSAT/SAT test prep.
I started my career in a bilingual classroom (Spanish/English) and taught there for 7 years. I then spent a year teaching remedial reading to bilingual middle school students before deciding to remain home with my children. For many different reasons, I decided to homeschool my children. As a result, I have taught every grade from Kindergarten - 8th grade (all subjects). While homeschooling, I have also been teaching classes on the side. I have taught poetry, composition, Spanish, sewing, and literature classes, while simultaneously tutoring students of all abilities and ages online and in person.
I hold a BS in Spanish and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and an MS in Reading and Writing Instruction. I have current teaching lisences in TESOL (K-12) and Reading and Writing Instruction (K-12).
I love my students and work hard to figure out how they best learn. By building strong relationships with students and parents, I foster growth and learning in a positive and supportive environment. I often hear that students cannot wait for their sessions to start! Each student is an individual and I try to honor that; there is no 'one size fits all' approach and I will work hard to find the 'key' to each student's learning.
I can't wait to hear from you!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to spend some time getting to know each student's strengths and weaknesses. Through these, an individualized approach and plan can be made for the student. No two students are alike and my plans and ways of approaching each subject plays to the strengths and best learning style of my students.
In the first session, educational goals will be discussed and these will be written out for both of us to reference as tutoring progresses. Once a goal is met, a new goal can be written if needed.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In 2003, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. While working as a Bilingual Teacher for 3rd and 4th graders, I earned my Master's Degree in Reading.
In 2009, I made the decision to put my teaching career on hold in order to have children and be at home with them.
While at home, I continued to tutor 6th-8th graders in Reading at a local middle school. When my children became of school age, I made the decision to homeschool and have been teaching my children all subjects since 2014. I currently have a 6th grader, 4th grader, and 1st grader. Through it all, I have continued to tutor on the side in my spare time. I have tutored Spanish, Sewing/Crafting, English, Reading, Essay Writing, Essay Editing, and English as a Second Language both in person and online. I have taught all ages from Pre-K through adult students.

How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring while I was still in college. I have always wanted to be a teacher and am very passionate about my chosen profession. Immediately after college, I began working as a Bilingual teacher at the elementary level. I have been teaching, in one way or another, ever since!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all ages from Pre-K through adult students. My students have ranged from native English speakers, to those who have just arrived in the country and are just starting to develop their English skills.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently met with a student who had been struggling with starting an essay. She had all of the ideas, but could not think how or where to begin. After much discussion and work, she was able to present an outline with a solid thesis, supporting points, and structure for her essay. At the end of the session, she knew what she was going to write.
This is just one experience, but it is the most rewarding feeling to guide a student from confusion and being at a loss to a feeling of confidence and strength about an assignment. These are moments that I truly treasure.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When looking for a quality tutor and teacher, you will want one who will cater to your individual style and personality. When education is individualized, it is most effective and meaningful. A knowledgeable teacher with a wide variety of experience will be able to meet your needs the most effectively.
