I am a professional English tutor who currently works at Tunxis Community College. I have also worked as a private tutor for students of many levels (1st grade-associate's degree). I have also worked with a number of English as a Second Language students. I have volunteered working with children with special needs as well.
I graduated with my Associate's Degree as Valedictorian. I had been working as a peer tutor throughout my time in college and became a professional tutor after I graduated. I am one semester away from finishing my Bachelor's degree in psychology.
I enjoy assisting students when it comes to all aspects of English work, including critical reading, writing, revising, and proofreading. As many students struggle through the constantly changing school environments during COVID-19, I wanted to reach out to more students.
There are so many things that I enjoy about the work I do. I enjoy interacting with students, learning about them, and helping them as much as I can. I have worked with students from many different backgrounds, which is very professionally and personally rewarding. I enjoy English reading and writing in general, but more than the subject itself, I enjoy the students who I work with.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I work with a new student, I first spend time talking to them about what class they're taking, the exact details of the assignment(s) that they're working on, and if they have any specific areas of concern. From there, we can begin working on whichever part of the reading/writing process that they are asking for help with.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was a peer tutor for over two years while I was a student at Tunxis Community College, where I received my Associate's degree (AS) in Liberal Arts and Sciences. After graduating as Valedictorian, I took a job at Tunxis's English Lab as a professional tutor. I have been working there for the past 2 1/2 years. I have also worked as a private tutor for students in elementary, middle, and high school. Additionally, I have worked with English as a Second Language students and students with special needs.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
The amount that I charge is based on a few different variables: how often we're meeting, how long the tutoring sessions are for, and whether it is a group or private session. Typically, I charge around $40 an hour for an individual tutoring session, but this can be flexible depending on the circumstances.
How did you get started teaching?
I got started teaching through friends who were working at the Academic Success and Tutoring Student when I was going to school. From there, it became something that I've really enjoyed doing and I haven't stopped.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many different types of students. My regular job is working with college-level students, including non-credit English classes, Composition 1 and 2 classes, and English as a Second Language classes. Outside of Tunxis, I have worked with students with special needs. I have worked with students ranging from 1st grade to college sophomores.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
The advice that I would give a student is to talk a bit with the person they're looking at hiring in general before beginning English work. It is important that the student and their teacher/tutor communicate well and have a connection. Not every tutoring style matches with every student's learning style. Finding the right person to work with is important and can make a significant difference in how successful they are. Once a connection is made, then the academic will can follow.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Some of the questions that I think are important for students to think about and be prepared to ask are:
1. What areas am I particularly concerned about? Are there specific portions of my work that I'm struggling with more than others?
2. How long do I have and how much of that time can I spend with a tutor or teacher for extra help?
3. What types of learning work best for me? (These are important to share with your tutor/teacher)
4. Am I prepared to get started work? This includes: Do I have the assignment instructions? Do I understand the assignment? Have I done all of the prep work required to begin this assignment/this portion of the assignment?
