About

Hi! My name is Dr. Mindy Nicewonger. I am an Earth and Climate Scientist with expertise in multiple geoscience fields. I am passionate about science education, particulary Earth Science. Now more so than ever, it is important that every person has an educated background to make informed decisions about climate change and our environement.

I am a first-generation college graduate and a woman in STEM! I earned a PhD in Earth System Science from the University of California, Irvine. There, I was trained to think of the earth in its many parts, including the land, the oceans, the atmopshere, and human interaction with the earth, and how all of these different aspects interact to form the Earth as we know it. My undergradute degree is from Texas A&M University in Meteorology with emphasis on Geology.

I have served as both a teaching assistant and an instructor for college level Earth Science courses. Here are some of my student evaluations:

"She is very enthusiastic and clear when giving explanations. She also has great patience when helping students.

"She is very very enthusiastic about the subject which helps to pay more attention during discussion and actually learning the material. She tries to help everyone understand and even gives us extra interesting information that gives us a better understanding of the subject. She is very responsive and easy to approach to talk to if we have any questions. She clears up any misunderstandings and makes the topic clearer."

"Funny teacher, makes lectures engaging and shows a great amount of interest in the subject"

"Mindy is a great instructor! She helps students who are struggling and she is clear with her instructions."

"The instructor is enthusiastic and creates an open environment for discussion to understand concepts and topics."

One of the best parts about Earth and Environmental Science is that it is something very tangible. You can go look outside and see rocks, weather, plants, and wildlife in in real time! I love that I can use current events as learning examples in the classroom or tutoring setting.

    2) Provide me with with course materials you are using BEFORE our meeting. It helps me understand exactly what has been distributed to your during class and/or allows me to determine a different method to instruct.

    3) If possible, provide me (your tutor) with concepts/topics that you need assistnace with before our session (via email or Google Drive), so that I have ample time to to think about the best teaching strategy for that topic.

I have always had a passion for teaching since a young girl. I would come home from 2nd grade and make "lesson plans" to teach my dolls.

In college, I tutored introductory meteorology courses. In graduate school, one of my favorite jobs was being a teaching assistant.

While at UC Irvine, I had the pleasure of interacting, teaching, and mentoring a diverse student-body population. UC Irvine is designated a Hispanic-serving and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution. Many of the students are also first-generation, like myself!

I am aware that every person is unique and their learning situations vary. I'm more than happy to accomdate your learning needs into my tutoring.
