About

I have been a special education teacher for over 20 years. My passion is to teach the most struggling learner learn to read and gain self confidence. I use Barton Reading and Spelling for students with dyslexia. I use games to reinforce skills and for fun. The student doesn't even realize they are learning.

I earned a BA in Special Education from Arizona State University. In 2005, I earned a Master's degree in Literacy and Reading from Walden University.

I look forward to meeting with you and your child.

I LOVE to teach students who really struggle to read. I love the "light bulb" moment when the students realize that he/she IS reading and CAN do it.

I graduated in 1991 with a degree in Special Education.  I found that teaching children to read is my passion.  I have always tutored after school and summers since 2000.

I work with students from K-8th grade that struggle to read. Most of my students do not have an IEP but continue to struggle to read, comprehend what they read, vocabulary skills and writing. We play games and have fun!

This past summer I had a new student who could not remember her alphabet letters in order, remember sounds of the letters or how to write the letters. It took about 6 weeks of tutoring but she learned all these skills so she had a firm foundation to move on to higher reading skills. She was so proud of herself.

Make sure the tutor can assess reading skills at the beginning of the tutoring partnership to show growth. Playing games is important to keep the student engaged. A warm and encouraging tutor is vital for students to make progress.

The student needs to think about where and what class is the most struggle for them. Maybe it's decoding, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary skills, or writing.
