About

I'm Andrew Booz, a reading and writing tutor, with a love of the English language. I have coached students of all ages in discovering what a joy reading and writing can be. Before working as a tutor, I wrote and edited publications for Denver Public Schools , where I especially enjoyed working directly with teachers and students to understand what printed materials they needed. Then I created them through my love of writing!

For my hourly fee, I first assess a student's abilities by watching and especially listening to him or her read and write. Then I gear my approach, language and attitude to the student. It's my greatest hope to watch students make small, but significant personal victories. Please consider selecting me for your student's reading and writing tutor. I look forward to meeting you! Thank you. Andrew

    Frequently asked questions

First, I take time to understand a new student, at least gain an impression of who they are as a person, before tutoring actually begins. Then I assess a student’s abilities to identify their individual patterns of reading difficulties, for example. That gets the process started.
At DePauw University (depauw.edu), I earned a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in English Composition. My career as a writer and editor of daily newspapers has provided me the opportunity to work directly with energetic young writers. That taught me a deep respect for each writer who brings asks my help in making their work a story worth reading.
For my tutoring services, I charge a $25 hourly fee. If you purchase 15 tutoring sessions, you get one session free!
As a young boy, I was shy and often struggled to express myself verbally and in writing. I would stutter my words in class. I would carry a dictionary with me whenever I wanted to settle in with a good book. I thought it was cool that I could read about how a word entered the language. But my reading abilities couldn’t keep pace with my interests. My parents wisely hired a reading tutor. The experience fascinated me with teaching, because my tutor showed me how much fun reading and writing truly can be.
I have worked with middle school, high school and university-level students of all ages to help them improve their reading and writing. The first class I taught, “Effective Writing,” was for Oregon State Highway Division employees who had bosses who didn’t like to write, so it became their job to write someone else’s ideas, which is usually difficult. I taught them how to make their writing more effective — and passed on tips on how to deal with a difficult boss.
