Ms. Weir's Tutoring Service
About
Homeschooling, urban education, private tutoring, classroom teaching, small group tutoring, public school, parocial school...I have experience in all these areas. Reluctant learners are my specialty!
Junior high has been my focus, and I have taught Math, Social Studies, English/Language Arts, Religion, and Science.
I am a writer, a reader, and a cyclist. I believe in relating learning to a student's interests and passions. And I know that all students can learn!
Teaching is a great privilege. The opportunity to work with young people and help them grow their gifts and knowledge is a gift. I love seeing confidence blossom in a student; seeing them light up with comprehension is so rewarding. And then there is just the joy of getting to know my students. Kids are so funny and smart and interesting...and of course I learn as much from them as they do from me.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I begin by asking the student questions about his/her interests, opinions, and experiences with school. Learning is based on connection and relationship, and it takes some time and sharing to build such. We usually do some open ended writing assignments or presentations or other creative medium as a way of beginning the process of getting to know one another. We then move on to working with assigned material, and as I learn more about the student's learning styles and needs, I tailor our work to suit those needs.
