Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
To find an accurate reading level for my students I assess them individually using 3-5 different literacy assessment programs. I use Fountas & Pinnel, DRA, Running Records, Readinga-z, etc.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I've spent over 10 years teaching guided reading in primary classrooms.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$50.00 per hour
How did you get started teaching?
I taught in Denver Public Schools, all Title 1, schools right out of high school. My senior year I held an internship in a Kinder classroom in Aurora. Then as I earned my BA from UNC I taught in elementary classrooms under the supervision of licensed teachers. After graduating in 2009 I spent another 7 years teaching second grade at Castro Elementary School in DPS.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have work with low income students my whole career. I've also worked struggling readers. Usually I am able to help students who are two+ years behind in their reading skills reach "grade level" by the end of 9 months of reading intervention work (small group instruction).
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I spend all of my free time outside on type 2 & type 3 adventures. I spent summer 2021 hiking on the Pacific Crest Trail. Then during the fall and winter I spent my free time playing in the slot canyons in the Southern Utah desert. Canyoneering is my jam!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I was a struggling reader myself in the elementary school. I know how difficult & frustrating it can be to learn how to read. However, I over came the struggle and by the time I was in sixth grade I was one of the top readers in my class.
I know where the tricks and traps are in the English language. I can help you!
