Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First of all, I determine what type of tutoring the parent of the student is wanting. I would then do a number of informal assessments to help me determine exactly where to begin and decide what the short term and long term goals will be. I would also offer to chat with student's teacher for any further pertinent information.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters Degree in Special Education Moderate Needs. I have experience working with students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and students with gaps in their skills. I have specialized training and experience with reading and math intervention.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$20.00/hour if the students come to me. Slightly more if I come to student.
How did you get started teaching?
20 years ago I started teaching with an emergency teaching license while attending the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley to obtain masters degree and fulfilling licensing requirements through the Colorado Dept. of Education. Since then, I have taught in public schools in the state of Colorado.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students in K through 12. I have worked with regular education students, as well as, students with IEP's with various types of disabilities.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
This spring I taught small reading groups via Zoom at a charter school in Ft. Colllins. It was something totally new for me, but it was fun and rewarding.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Each student learns differently, and it is important to find a teacher that can teach a student by addressing their individual needs and fits the way the student learns best. A good teacher should be able to make learning fun and that the student feels successful!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Most students know what they need to learn to be successful. At first, they might not think so, but while discussing their experiences in school and the areas they would like to improve, a good teacher should be able to make an individualized education plan for the student. Once the goals and objectives have been determined and agreed upon by both the student and the parent, specific daily targets should be planned and shared with student and parent.
