About
I can provide exceptional one-on-one literacy instruction which includes work on reading comprhension strategies, vocabulary work, all types of essays (persuasive, narrative, descriptive, expository and college entrance), ACT prep., historical literacy and perspectives, as well as all facets of poetry instruction and public speaking.
I originally began my teaching career as a Social Studies teacher and have since added Language Arts to my skillset. I have always been intrigued by the power of language and the effect that structure and diction can have on communication. I really love teaching people how to create powerful writing which can effectively communicate depth and feeling. It is awesome for me to be a part of the intellectual growth of my students.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
The first meeting is typically just a consultation about student goals during which we look at some of the subjects and skills that the student might need help with. Lots of questions and answers. We might set some goals and a schedule. It's really a "get to know each other" session that provides both student, and tutor with valuable information to move forward with a plan for higher achievement.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a recent graduate of the Boettcher Teacher Residency program and served my residency in a Language Arts classroom at Brighton High School. I am confident that my prior teaching experience at Brighton High School, Jefferson High, and Arvada West, along with the significant time spent in field placements at DSST, and other area charter schools makes me an ideal person to help you with your academic needs.
I recently completed my Master of Arts in Education (culturally and linguistically diverse) and, in 2012, I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Behavioral Science with a minor in Secondary Education. The Social Sciences and Language Arts are my endorsement areas and I have a great passion for language and History. I scored in the top 15% regionally on the Praxis II exam in my content area, and I am eager to share my passion for learning with students.
I spent two semesters as a Youth Services Facilitator at Adams City High School developing and implementing a Freshman Retention Program, and did some exciting things there with a challenging group of Frosh. It has also been my pleasure to spend two semesters in a DSST classroom with Mr. Jim Stephens, where I learned an immeasurable amount about what it means to be an effective educator and leader. I was fortunate enough to develop a Big History “Literacy Toolkit” under the tutelage of Mr. Stephens, and I feel very lucky to have studied under him. During my student teaching, at Arvada West H.S., I developed and implemented a comprehensive unit on ancient Rome, from founding myth through the fall of the Republic, and Pax Romana. I also developed a short unit covering the Progressive Era in American History. I truly value the experience of my residency year at BHS and have learned and grown immeasurably under Mrs. Shelly LaTerra’s mentorship. I’ve developed some really compelling units of literature study and worked in collaboration with some great educators in SD 27-J last year.
I am confident that as a tutor for you, I can create a productive, energetic, learning environment that is student centered. Thank you for your consideration.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I typically ask $40.00/hour and $30.00 for the initial consultation. I am open to negotiation due to any extenuating circumstances.
