About

Hello! My name is Becca. I hold an active license in Elementary Education and Special Education, and bring over 10 years of experience working with children. I have taught in DPS as a bilingual Mild-Moderate Special Education teacher for 3 years, and am now seeking private literacy tutoring opportunities with elementary-aged students.

I am particularly passionate about students who require additional differentiation to the general education curriculum for engagement. In my years teaching Special Education, I learned a wide variety of assessment measures to determine the root cause of why students might be struggling in school. Then, I develop targeted interventions using a variety of research-based curriculums to create rigorous, age-appropriate, and individualized lessons.

I believe that a strong relationship is the essential first step to engagement in learning. Then, we use multi-sensory strategies and a variety of games to teach through play, while simultaneously building social-emotional competencies. I love to use the outdoors and real-life situations to teach concepts, so there are certainly opportunities for field trips! I believe that this unique time in education offers families an opportunity to fill in many gaps in student’s typical general education curriculum: problem solving, critical thinking, phonics/phonemic awareness, science and social studies, social/emotional learning, and building a growth mindset!

I love the rich relationships that develop with students during this process of holistic assessment, intervention, and progress monitoring. Every child is different, and only in getting to know them can you understand why they are struggling. School can be full of challenges for students and families alike, and I feel so honored to step into this vulnerable place with them and problem solve together.

    Frequently asked questions

First, I work to develop a relationship with the student. Particularly with younger children, this step is essential for future engagement, trust, and academic growth. So, we often play some games together, chat, and get to know each other a bit.

Next, I administer a thorough set of baseline assessments, to determine the student's present levels of performance, and any areas of strength or weakness. We break up these assessments into short chunks, with lots of games and breaks in between, to make it fun and easy.

Then, after aggregating the assessment results, I go over them with parents and create goals for instruction. I also go over the results with students, using a kid-friendly tracker, and create goals with them as well. The students will continue to set personal goals and track their data throughout tutoring. This is great for engagement and allows students to see how they are growing!

I have a license in Elementary Education and Special Education. Completed ASPIRE to Teach through CU Denver in 2018. Trained in Orton Gillingham, No-Nonsense Nurturer, Leveled Literacy Instruction, Intervención Lectoescritura, Estrellita, Touch Math, Bridges, and AIMSweb.
