Welcome to Agapist tutoring! I am a professional teacher who has taught for over 16 years! I have a teaching license in Linguistically Diverse education, and my degree is in Latin and Greek literature with a minor in Italian. I am fluent in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese, and I have lived in Costa Rica, Russia and China. I have taught in the public schools in the USA for a total of 10 years, and earned teacher of the year at my school in 2015. I have taught Middle School Language Arts at all 3 grade levels, High school English, Middle School Latin, High School Philosophy, English as a Second Language, and College English Conversation, American Culture and American History courses. I have tutored Latin, Spanish, Mandarin and Italian as well. I am patient, diverse, and I have many different methods to appeal to many different learners. It would be my honor and joy to come alongside you and help you be successful in any subject.

I love working with others on languages and literature because the interactions go both ways! I usually learn many things from the students I work with. Also, the joy of appreciating literature or a language with someone else makes life worthwhile!

Frequently asked questions

Whenever I encounter a new student, I first want to assess their learning style and better understand their strengths and weaknesses so that I can decide which instructional practices will best suit that person.  Then, I will assess the student on thier content knowledge so that I know the student's gaps or needs.  I will also do my best to integrate student interests into the learning to improve engagement with the content. After I am clear what a student needs, I will seek resources to best equip the student, instruct the student, review and reflect on student learning, then assess the student.

I have a CO professional teaching license in Linguistically Diverse Education, most of a Master's degree in that subject, a Bachelor's degree in Classics (Latin and Greek literature), a minor in Italian, and a certificate of proficency in Spanish Language. I am mostly fluent in Mandarin Chinese and use this language in my home.I'm AVID Certified in Close Reading. I have a CELTA certification from Cambridge University to teach adults ESL.  I have 16 years of teaching experience in USA and China, and I earned Teacher of the Year at my school in 2015

I am flexible with pricing depending on student needs, but to make my trip worthwhile, I charge a minimum of $30.00 per hour.  For specialized subjects like Mandarin or Spanish or AP Literature, I will charge a minimum of $40.00 per hour.

I loved literature, languages and writing all through high school and college, and I knew that I wanted to spend my life sharing this passion with others.  I first started teaching Latin and High School English at a private college-prep school, and after 2 years I decided to start working with public school students.

Wealthy well-educated students (private college prep school), students living in poverty, students from various countries all over the world with various levels of English language proficiency (14 years working with English Language Learners). I've also worked a lot with SPED students who need extra support understanding content.

Recently, I took my wife and 3 beautiful children on a rock-scrambling expedition and picnic at Garden of the Gods.  It was such a beautiful day, and my 4 year old son climbed a very big rock and felt a great sense of accomplishment. My 2 girls encouraged him and helped him make it to the top.

Find a teacher who is well-read and reads a broad variety of literature. Versatility is key when it comes to language and literature.  Also, as you seek a teacher, check to make sure that the person actually listens to you and pays attention to your thoughts, interpretations, confusions and frustrations and focuses on you as a person. A teacher should know and love the student more than the content.

How do I learn best?

What are my strengths and weaknesses?

How can a tutor help me access this content?

What about this content do I completely grasp?

What about this content do I not understand?

Do I see the relevance of this content in my life? If not, what is the purpose of this content?

What requires more attention for me to do it well?
