Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When working with new students, I like to assess their goals and aspirations. I ask about the following:
1) How are classes conducted?
2) What do you find useful or not useful in school?
3) What do you find difficult or easy in the class?
4) How are tests structured? (
I also like to get an idea of their learning style (how their classes are conducted, what they find useful or not useful, what do they wish was different about the class, etc.). I try to be flexible according to the needs of the students.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I obtained a double degree in Chinese and History at the University of California, Davis, and I've also taken intensive summer school and extension classes at University of California, Berkeley. I was also a Division 1 student athlete a UC Davis, so I understand the pressure and the expectations in the life of athletes pursuing higher degrees. In high school, I tutored elementary school students in math and reading comprehension. After I graduated college, I had the amazing opportunity to be granted a TA position at UC Davis despite not being a graduate student. I loved TAing at UC Davis and it gave me great professional experience in higher education.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Prices vary based on services needed. I use hourly pay rates, and I offer discounts for group lessons.
How did you get started teaching?
My teaching began in high school mostly. I was a teacher's assistant in middle school and in high school, but my experience working in a classroom and interacting with students came from volunteer work at one of my local elementary schools when I was in high school. I interacting with more tutors in college and learned more through their techniques. I've also assisted classmates with subject material, such as college essay-writing. My real-time paid job as a "teacher" was at UC Davis.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with a wide variety of students, including athletes, students with learning disabilities, elementary school children, college students and foreign-exchange students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Students should look for teachers who have a lot of energy, flexibility and patience. I think having an easy-going attitude is very important because while students may be stressed out about their grades or performance, it's first and foremost important to stay calm, collected and level-headed when approaching anything.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Explain the situation. (Tell your story. Explain your thoughts or concerns regarding your academics right now.)
Have a clear idea about your goals. (Where do you wish to go with your academics? What do you hope to achieve?)
Understand your strengths and weaknesses. (What do you do well with? What do you struggle with?)
Explain your learning preferences. (What in the classroom works for you? What doesn't work?)
Explain the format of your tests. (How does your teacher format tests? What's challenging?)
