About
Reading with Sarah offers high quality literacy education for students ages 4-9 (pre-K through 3rd grade.) I also provide remedial intstruction for students ages 10-11. I love being able to build students’ confidence in their reading skills.
Drawing on 15 years of experience in education and 6 years of reading-specific experience, instruction is individualized to the needs and interests of the student. Using a structured literacy approach, I teach with a variety of interactive, multisensory reading activities to engage and motivate students. I have worked with students with a range of academic skills as well as those with learning challenges, including but not limited to ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and processing disorders. After a few years of classroom teaching, I was a Reading Intervention Teacher and a Reading Specialist at elementary schools, and now I work full-time as an independent educator/tutor. While my expertise lies in reading, I also tutor elementary writing and math. I offer online tutoring and in-person tutoring. If your student has a peer with similar reading skills, I am able to do group tutoring for a discounted price as well as do book clubs for 2-3 friends.
To share my love for reading, I have a childrens literature Instagram account. I create and maintain book recommendation lists for my clients and the general public, accessible through my website and GoodReads.

Reading is one of my own personal joys in life, and I am passionate about helping students to find their own reading path. I love supporting students in being able to recognize the rewards and progress from their hard work in our sessions. I enjoy helping students find books that are a good fit for their reading skills and interests.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
First, I meet with the parents to find out what their child's needs are and what areas they are looking for support in. Then we schedule two paid, trial sessions to make sure that it is a good fit before deciding on a long-term schedule. In the two sessions, I spend time getting to know the student: their general interests and hobbies, their reading and/or writing interests and attitudes, and their academic skills. With this information, I create an individualized plan for the student of the areas to focus on in tutoring as well as a recommendation for frequency and length of sessions. I communicate this to the parents. I may also give home practice suggestions and/or book recommendations if requested by the parents.
