Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Initially I get to know the student and then am a fun brain teaser to engage the student. Then an academic assessment and a conversation regarding strengths and struggles of the subject matter. Then I'll make sure to present the material in a way the student can learn and understand. Of course, this varies for each student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.S. in Microbiology from UC Davis, 25 years of private tutoring experience and 5 years at a private, one to one high school teaching Integrated 1 and 2, Algebra1, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-calculus, Calculus, English, Astronomy, Chemistry, Physics, and Chess.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $70 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I owned a teaching supply store for many years and tutored students at the store. I've always enjoyed sharing my academic knowledge with students with different needs and abilities
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students from pre-K through adult. I have worked with children with severe mental as well as physical disabilities as well as incredibly advanced students needing more rigor than their traditional school is able to provide.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
For three years I worked with a high school student who struggles with basic math, reading, and writing. I taught him how to be a stronger writer in English class and helped him get up to speed on pre-Algebra, then geometry, then Algebra 2 and Trigonometry. His confidence grew and we got through preCalculus and Physics. He is now attending Loyola University in Chicago and studying film. I could not be more proud.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find someone you are comfortable working with. Someone who will patiently show you another way to learn if the first go around isn't sinking in for you.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
How do I learn? By what method and in what setting?
