About
I work with students from K -12 in a variety of subjects. I also work with college students on essay writing and essay reviews. I have a BA in Philosophy from UC Berkeley.
I am patient and encouraging. I can help whether you need help just getting the work done, or you need extra assistance really understanding the concepts of the material.
I am a World Champion martial artist and a life coach who focuses on working with teens and young adults. I ran a martial arts studio for 20 years. The same skills that lead to a black belt also lead to success in the classroom: patience, focus, persistence, and grit.
I love connecting with kids and their parents. I've been a teacher in some capacity for most of my adult life. There's nothing better than helping someone solve a puzzle and unlock a new way of looking at things.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Typically, parents reach out to me to get help for their child. We talk about what they're looking for and make sure we think we're a good fit. Then I do a single session with the student and make sure that THEY agree I'm a good fit for them. If things are clicking, we set up a schedule.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I taught martial arts for over 20 years. I've worked with students from pre-school through college. Teaching a classroom of students requires the same skills, whether it's academic or physical instruction. My experience as a teacher taught me to communicate with students and their parents. I am good at assessing a student's ability to focus, understand concepts, and communicate what they understand. I've worked with students with all different types of learning differences, and I understand that every brain accesses the world differently.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I generally charge $30 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I've always worked with kids. In middle school, I tutored elementary school students. In high school and college, I worked as a camp counselor and a daycare counselor. When I worked in a corporate environment, part of my job was teaching classes on how to use new software systems.
I became a martial arts instructor because I love training, and because I saw it as a way to help teens and their families learn important leadership and communication skills.
Today I am a life coach, and I also tutor because I love to work with kids and their families in whatever capacity they need.
