About

I distinguish myself from other tutors by my ability to listen well and guide a student in his or her thought processes rather than just feed answers.

I've grown up seeing many learning styles and can adapt my teaching to fit any style.

Currently, I am a Robotics Software Engineering Intern at Canvas Construction. I love how I can talk with workers and other engineers to better understand problems with our robot and work to really make a difference.

In my free time, I love to teach and tutor. What continuously drives me are those sparks of sudden understanding or curiosity that light up in my students' eyes. These make all the hard work before worth it.

Alvin was my Computer Science tutor for the entire fall semester of 2018, and he was not only patient but also incredibly proficient! With his guidance, I was able to grasp key concepts and learn the course material in an effective manner. Alvin is truly passionate in helping his students to succeed and I am so grateful to have Alvin as my tutor! Thank you Alvin:)

Frequently asked questions

People may instinctively describe a tutor as a replacement teacher, but tutors are from this. While teachers will focus on lecturing and covering required material for a class, tutors should focus on building a supportive environment that fosters a student's confidence to ask any questions and review any material.

My main priority when tutoring is to first build a trusting relationship with my students so they view me as an equal and aid in learning rather than some lecturer. I have to listen to my students' goals and try to gauge their strengths and weaknesses. After this, I can propose a structured or flexible lesson plan based on the students' learning styles.

I have tutored starting in 6th grade, helping younger students at my middle school with algebra, reading, and English. In high school, I tutorted all levels of math(up to Calculus BC), English, Mandarin, and any AP subjects that I took myself. In my freshman year of college, I traveled to a nearby high school to help teach a high school chemistry class. Currently, I tutor basic and intermediate programming to younger college students and plan to serve as a Teacher Assistant(TA) in a class.

To be honest, I am not familiar with private tutoring pricing as I have never done it before. I am very skilled in personal tutoring through volunteering and paid positions, but my pricing for private tutoring is solely based on my observations of others' pricing.

I started tutoring in middle school and have loved teaching ever since. I truly developed strong teaching skills after taking a course at my college(required for the paid tutoring position there) that taught me how to truly listen to students and guide them in the thought process rather than immediately throwing out answers.

I have worked with students of all ages, from 1st grade to high school and college students.

Anyone can have the pre-requisite knowledge to tutor, but a student needs to make sure a tutor actually guides the thinking process and encourages brainstorming rather than simply giving away answers.
