About
I began teaching piano as a teenager, and later had the pleasure of teaching my own children in addition to countless others. Many of my students have grown to be fine musicians of many instruments, and lovers of music as a vital part of their lives. I am especially inspired by the work of Shinichi Suzuki, whose method not only informs my work with piano students but my work as an educator, a parent, and a friend. Suzuki believed that we are not ‘born’ with a special talent for music, but that all of us can learn to play beautifully when given the gift of musical education. I agree with his words, "Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited." I tailor my time with my students to their unique backgrounds, experiences, and interests, and at the same time most lessons include confidence-building and repertoire to support overall growth and musical skill. My overarching goal for each student, in the end, is to nurture, along with proficiency, a true love of music!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to discover first what my new student's prior musical experience is as well as their comfort level, and then what their goals are for their time studying with me. Lessons are flexible and unique to each student. In general, a lesson will include:
* warm-up
* ear training
* technique (scales, arpeggios, chords, etc)
* sight reading
* rhythm
* assigned pieces / repetoire development
* theory as appropriate for student
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing piano since I was eight, and started teaching when I was in high school. I've loved every minute of sharing the joy of music with my students! I am particularly inspired by Shinichi Suzuki's philosophy, the great Japanese violinist and teacher, who developed the Suzuki method. He taught that musical ability is not an inborn talent but one that can be developed in anybody, but must be "nurtured with love". His method has inspired me as a teacher, a mother, a student, and a human being. I use his repertoire as the basis for my beginning and intermediate students, supplementing with sight reading and technique books, and I believe that this approach is both effective and super fun for students of all ages! Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I work with my students on a quarterly basis, with flexible scheduling. We meet 10X per quarter, as some families choose to study during the summer, and others choose to take summers off. I'm super flexible :).
