Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When meeting a new student it is important to get to know them along with their academic level. We will do a get to know you activity and I will ask him or her questions on subjects he or she feels strong with or needs more improvement in. I will also give the student a reading, writing and math mini quiz to understand the academic level he or she is at and what type of learning he or she is in order to meet the needs of the student. From there we will create a plan to accomplish his or her learning goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Masters in Special Education from the University of Southern California and a teaching credential in multiple subjects. I was a coordinator for ReadersPLus program at USC working at Norwood Street Elementary School leading a team of tutors along with conducting one on one tutoring for students in grades K-5th in areas of math and literacy. I completed my student teaching at a public school in Mar Vista working with kids in resource creating IEP's and functional behavior analyses along with working in 3rd and Kindergarten classrooms teaching language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. I currently teach at a charter school in the pacific palisades with a 3rd grade classroom.

I put in outside the profession a lot of time to ensure your child will gain the success he or she needs. I do professional development, reviewing work and giving feedback, and I also create a curriculum for them based on their needs and their interests.
How did you get started teaching?
I always had a passion of working with children who had learning and behavioral struggles in schools. I realized teaching was my calling when I worked for the Children Defense Fund Freedom Schools. In my classroom I helped curb summer reading loss along with working on behavior management for students aged 4-7. I decided to pursue my passions of attending graduate school at USC Rossier School of Education.
What types of students have you worked with?
I worked with students who have language comprehension struggles, hard of hearing, dyslexia, disgraphia, ADD and ADHD students along with students who are in the gifted programs at schools. I work with all types of learners and strive for them to enjoy learning and succeed.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
An event I am proud of is when I was doing small group instruction for my kindergarteners on sounding out sounds. We were learning the sound a p makes which is a bilabial sound involving both lips. Together we traced with paint on the paper the shape of the letter then I modeled how to sound it out. One of the students has a language deficit and it was difficult for him to sound the p out and would mistake it with a b sound. I had showed him that air comes out when we pronounce the p and after 5 times modeling he finally was able to sound the p out and identify the letter using pictures.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I would advise them to ask the subject area and level the teacher is able to instruct in along with the different teaching styles.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Students should think about what they want to improve on, if they need breaks in between sessions to regain focus, and what they want to further strenghten.
